Reduce, reuse and have fun, too

Posted on 22nd February 2012 in Fun

I used to be the sort of mom who strung Mylar balloons with ribbon strings for my sons birthday parties. For each of his eight years, I handed out goody bags stuffed with candy and 99 Cents Only Store toys. I bought cakes topped with plastic decorations. I served junk food and Capri Suns. I was oblivious to the mounds of waste I was generating. I just wanted to throw the perfect party.

This year, I decided on something different. For my sons ninth, trash was the enemy. The goal: a party that generates zero garbage. There would be no Slinkies or wax candy mustaches. And Mylar? That was definitely out.

Throwing a zero-waste party was a challenge. Im not going to lie. Certain...

Posted on 21st February 2012 in Retailing

In our latest preview of one of our major events of the year, Internet Retailing Expo (IRX 2012), we asked Chris Conway of Asda and Lee Behan of Publicis Blueprint how digital brand zones have helped lift sales at Asda.com. The two will be speaking at the Customer Experience Conference on March 22, the second day of the free-to-attend two-day event.

Asda’s digital trading team has worked with suppliers to build digital brand zones – shops within shops – with the aim of engaging Asda.com shoppers. This approach has helped to lift traffic and conversion rates in categories where online engagement was previously low. So how did Asda and Publicis Blueprint go about...

The Big Bang Theory: Flags Waving, Guns Flying and Fun with Siri

Posted on 20th February 2012 in Fun

Oh Big Bang Theory, I love ya. Can I just say right off the top how hilarious the Sheldon/Amy Fun with Flags videos were? Particularly at the end, when they were in costume; Amy as the pretzel just cracked me right up. This is the kind of Amy I can get behind. She still had her comments about Pennys beauty and love, but it was a bit more restrained and a lot less creepy. I really appreciated Amy more in this episode.

What a great storyline this week for Raj. Hats off to the writers for finally giving him more to do. We were also able to get a glimpse of classic Raj and Howard and their weird sexual undertones when they both removed the plastic from Rajs phone. It reminded me off the episode...

Inspire your journey with travel tech

OnTheWay

People often romanticize the wide open road. In reality, after the first hour or so, road trips get awfully boring. Next time youre planning a road trip, consult OnTheWay, a travel website that will help you pinpoint interesting sights, eateries and activities along the way to your destination. Using the site is a piece of cake. After inputting the start and end points (and any other pit stops), you choose a route. OnTheWay finds potential stops on each leg of the trip. Depending how desolate the area, it might recommend a sea of fast food joints. But for the route from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, it also found some gems, including a farmers market. These stopping...

How Steve Jobs Reinvented Retailing, Pt. 2

Posted on 17th February 2012 in Retailing

NEW YORK — In reviewing the way Apple CEO Steve Jobs changed retailing, two categories become evident: the basics (or the things you should be doing) and actions based on Jobs ethos (more difficult, but with greater rewards).

Todays column focuses on those basics:

Build a team of A-players and use the best available experts in every area.

Jobs learned from everything and everybody. He recruited Ron Johnson, Targets vice president of merchandising (now CEO of JC Penney), to develop and head his retail operations, and he put Mickey Drexler, who transformed The Gap, on Apples board. He relied on top architects and designers to create and evolve his stores.

The...

Ghost-busting fun will make you feel good

Haunt, Microsoft Xbox 360, Microsoft Studios / NanaOn-Sha. Rated E, MSRP 800 Microsoft Points. Kinect Required.

I recently celebrated my 36th birthday so perhaps it was senility setting in when I not only dipped into the Xbox Live Marketplace again for a game to review but also strayed once more toward a game leaning on the supernatural in the wake of my ghastly experience with AMY. AMY, reviewed last week, is a horror-themed game that is just plain horrible.

Haunt is definitely no AMY, however not only is it a kid-friendly ghoulish adventure and not some hopeless attempt at the grotesque, but Haunt lives within its means, uses the Kinect about as well as you could hope...

Vermont Senate panel hears testimony on drug trade, gang activity

Posted on 15th February 2012 in Activity

MONTPELIER — Evidence of gang activity is on the rise in Vermont, spurred by an active illicit drug market and the ease of obtaining guns in the state, the commander of the Vermont Narcotics Investigation Unit told a Senate panel Thursday. Also at the hearing, a state Health Department official expressed support for the concept of allowing state police drug investigators access to Vermonts prescription drug monitoring database.

Theres no question that we have gang members from large metropolitan areas coming to Vermont specifically to profit from the drug trade, Vermont State Police Capt. Glenn Hall said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Hall said drug traffickers...

How to Spot a Fake Online Product Review

Posted on 14th February 2012 in Uncategorized

We didnt need aNew York Timesarticleto bring our attention to the fact that certain companies bribetheir customers for good Internet reviews in exchange for rebates. The fake reviews speak for themselves. Internet reviews can push precious sales away from retailers, which is why certain companies have taken to buying customer satisfaction, like VIP Deals, which gave full refunds to customers who reviewed their Kindle case with 100 percent, perfect FIVE-STAR scores on Amazon.com, as the Timess David Streitfeld reports. But this kind of thing happens all the time, on all sorts of sites. For suspicious consumer, there are a few ways to spot these faux compliments.

US seasonal flu activity picks up

Posted on 13th February 2012 in Activity

ATLANTA, Jan. 28 (UPI) — Seasonal flu activity appears to be picking up in the United States but it is still relatively low nationwide, federal health officials said.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the percentage of respiratory specimens that were positive for seasonal flu inched higher to 4.9 percent for the week of Jan. 21 from 4.3 percent reported the week before, while doctor visits for flu-like illness are below national and regional baselines.

The H3N2 virus has dominated national flu activity so far this season. Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri and Virginia reported regional flu activity — but no state has reported widespread flu activity.
